If you’re like me, just the thought of Indian food makes you reach for a box of Tums. But when it comes to the cuisine at Bindi, I say keep the curry coming.

Located on 13th street between Chestnut and Sansom, Bindi is a modern Indian BYO that caters to even the most apprehensive of diners. It may be overshadowed by the latest restaurants from Stephen Starr and Michael Solomonov, but it certainly deserves your attention, and your appetite, pronto!

Before I even get to the food, let’s start with the drinks. Trade in your favorite lager or vino for a big bottle of rum, vodka or tequila. You won’t even taste the alcohol when mixed with a pitcher of pomegranate-ginger lemonade or mango sharbat. So fresh and sweet are the cocktails that you’ll wonder why you bother with beer at all.

Ready for some naan? You’ll never crave traditional naan again once you’ve had the roti, handmade breads with minted cucumber raita. It comes in four delicious flavors: cauliflower and sea salt, spinach and lentil-rice, sweet goat cheese, and potato. All arrive on a wooden board with individual dipping sauces that perfectly complement the soft breads.

By the time your entrée arrives, you’ll be wishing you saved more room. You can’t go wrong with skewers of chicken tikka marinated in spiced yogurt and doused in chana masala sauce. If you’re looking for something more savory, they offer succulent hangar steak paired with roasted fingerling potatoes or grilled lamb chops with pulao rice. Though the menu changes frequently, Bindi serves up an assortment of fish and vegetarian dishes that include shrimp and squash curry, pan seared blue nose bass, and vegetarian quinoa cake of portabello mushrooms, lentils and asparagus.

Since Bindi doesn’t accept reservations, you’ll want to get there early on a Friday or Saturday night. If you need to kill some time before a table’s ready, check out Apothecary Lounge across the street for some sinfully delicious concoctions.

I’ve always been evasive when it comes to Indian food but this makes me want to give it a try. When I do finally take the plunge, Bindi will be at the top of my list.
