Twitter Your Food

One of my fondest memories of being young is the roach coaches on 8th Street in Modesto, CA. The bars would close at 2am, and then we’d head over to the line of taco trucks and get a huge burrito for $2.50- just the thing to fill a hungry stomach after a night of drinking. (Please drink responsibly before visiting a roach coach.)
But Modesto is not that large of a city, certainly not compared to Philly, so where does one go for that late night mobile snack, or for a quick lunch getaway for that matter? My wife and I are new to the city, so we have no idea where some of these guys are; not to mention most of them take the word ‘mobile’ very seriously, meaning they change locals almost hourly. So what to do when lunch arrives, or that craving for sweets or caffeine hits you mid-afternoon? Well, of course go to Twitter. Yes, the same website celebrities and teenagers use to espouse useless information of their whereabouts and personal thoughts is now serving your stomach. Ever since the economy went to the dumpster, many people have taken their love of cooking and made it into a mobile business, low overhead and minimal city license requirements have made this a booming business in a slumped economy. This means competition is fierce, which is good news for your stomach and your wallet. These bright people know the market and update their whereabouts regularly so you can easily find them.
The cupcake industry is one that has created a few competitors in the area. Dave and Cheryl Dilks’ Call Me Cupcake roams the city, and is also available for events on the weekends. You can find their updates @CallMeCupcake. And Gretchen Fantini’s Sweetbox can be found @sweetboxtruck. Need more variety for your dessert needs? Try Sugar Philly Dessert Truck @sugarphilly.
Itching for the afternoon cup of joe? Find Hub Bub Coffee @hubbubcoffee. And for a great Philly style lunch, check out South Philly Experience @southphillyexp.
There are many more out there, and a 5 minute Google search will put you touch with them. So stop giving Paris Hilton your precious time and do something she would never think of- Tweet and find a cupcake!
