Lyrics are purpose and meaning. When you sing in the shower you don’t sing chords. When you sing in the shower you don’t sing a plain melodic line (unless you are a fan of classical music of course). No, for the most part you sing the words. Music is communicative and passes from musician to the world. The common listener may not understand what a chord or a time signature is, but he/she does understand a lyric.

There is no doubt that music alone can be powerful.

The Music of Carmina Burana, it’s lyrics in latin and essentially just tonal, can paint a powerful picture when played over a film of soldiers marching into battle, be it Mel Gibson in Braveheart or a muddy linebacker on Any Given Sunday. However, the music moves us when combined with the pictures. The common viewer is moved by the combination of sight and sound.

Music is an atmosphere. Atmospheres can be beautiful, and there is beauty when there is no lyric as well or when the listener can interpret a feeling or a sense. And yes, that vagueness can reach to one level of your soul, but when that atmosphere is then combined with a lyric, images become concrete and deeper more specific levels can be reached.

Great music can be destroyed by a bad lyric.

A woman enters a party. She is stunning, yet enters alone. You are looking for a person to connect with and you are immediately drawn to her. The attraction is intense. She has beautiful features and is dressed in the finest clothes. Her beauty is apparent to all.

She stops a room when she enters as all the men see her and each becomes more curious.

You wonder why she is alone? How she could possibly be alone?

You wonder this until you speak to her.

She has no depth. Her opinions are vapid. She is way too into herself. She looks beyond you as you try to make conversation. You drift away realizing that any meaningful conversation is pointless. Later on in the evening a friend points her out to you and speaks of how attractive she is. You look at her again and she isn’t all that remembered her being.

“I don’t see it.” you tell your friend.

She is beautiful music with terrible lyrics.

But then again some guys are into that.
