Band: Surgeon

Members: Lydia Giordano on lead guitar, Scan Boltron on vocals and bass, Dave Latimer on drums, and Chris Wilson on rhythm guitar.

When you first head to Surgeon’s MySpace page and scroll down to see their default picture and “Contacting Surgeon” background, you may be turned off if your first thought is ugh… another Metal band. I know I was, as I’m not a fan of metal… not even a little bit.  Hell, they even list themselves in the Metal genre… so I when I clicked play to give a listen to their music I was expecting the worst (though I’m sure Metal fans would disagree with me about Metal being the worst), headache inducing, pterodactyl screaming type of music that one could produce. However…

What’s that old saying? Don’t judge a book by its cover? This couldn’t be any more true with Surgeon. When I realized I wasn’t deaf yet, I concluded that I have just heard yet another great quality song produced by what turned out to be a great sounding band, also produced from the greatest city in our country, Philadelphia. After only ONE song, I had to do more research on this band, whether it involved just reading all the band info on their MySpace or trolling the internet in search of Surgeon.

Thankfully I didn’t have to do much trolling, as I was able to get some great info off their MySpace and their website (which lead me to their Facebook, where I instantly became a fan). I was a little disappointed in not being able to find anything that the band had to say about themselves, I dove right back into their music to get the full Surgeon experience.

Angry Guest is a seven track gem that, if you haven’t heard, I highly recommend heading over to any of their social networking sites or band website to give a listen to. After only listening to Walking Fire a few times, I found myself jamming out, (as only a white guy like me could) singing horribly and playing air guitar. I feel overjoyed and sad at the same while listening to them; overjoyed for finding a new band I can really rock out to and sad for just now finding out about them. Take this time now to go listen to just ONE of their songs and I dare you to not be a fan.  Go on… I’ll wait.

I don’t use this term much, and I’m sure I’ll hate myself in the morning for doing so, but it’s rad isn’t it? After coming to this realization myself, I had to look at how Surgeon classified themselves again to make sure I read it correctly.  It indeed did say Metal under their band name.  I had to listen to all seven tracks again… and again… and several more times.  Not to understand their genre, but because it was that damn good.

You can definitely hear the Metal in their music.  It’s a mix of Metal and Rock.  Basically, the best thing since sliced bread… you get that awesome Metal (perhaps not true Metal, more like Progressive Metal) sound with what will always, in my opinion, be the best kind of vocals, Rock.

If you haven’t gotten yourself a copy of their album Angry Guest yet, do so, because you’re going to want to rock out to their songs everywhere, not just at your desk while at work.
