What What

May All Acquaintance Be Forgot

This & That

At the end of 2009, I remember constantly saying, and hearing other people say, “2010 is a year for change.” Some said those words in trust and expectation of a better life with our new president. Others, like myself, said them with determination and the understanding that we only have ourselves to rely on for that.

So far, 2010 has definitely been a year of change for me, and I’ve noticed it’s been the same for so many others around me. Why? Because for all of us, 2010 has been a year of acknowledgment. A great man once said, “We cannot change what we don’t acknowledge.” OK, so it was just Dr.Phil, but he is absolutely right. The first step in all progression is to always have complete awareness of what is causing us to stand still in a place where we’ve overstayed our welcome. It’s not always easy to accept that comfort doesn’t necessarily equal satisfaction. Just because we’re comfortable where we are, we often need to take a long hard look at it and ask ourselves, “Is this where I want to be forever?”

I don’t know about you, but procrastination has always been a hurdle in my life. I’m a logical person, and, more often than not, I know what I have to do if I want to lead a good life. However, actually doing it can be quite the struggle, especially if I’ve settled into a certain routine. I am constantly having to remind myself that I have one life, one shot, and today is one day I will never get back. Therefore, I need to always keep in mind where I want to be and what needs to be done to get there. Unfortunately (and I’m sure this is true for all), sometimes what needs to be done will result in things getting worse before they get better.

Take a drug addict, for example. Addiction is a vice is a habit is a routine is a comfortable lifestyle; probably the most controlling and powerful one at that. So many drug addicts are smart enough to know that sobriety is what will keep them alive, but the idea of withdrawal is too horrifying to consider because… they don’t want to feel like they’re dying. That’s a pretty shitty situation to be in; having to decide whether to feel like you’re dying now, or actually die later. Thankfully, there are recovering addicts out there who at one point acknowledged that something had to be done if they wanted to live. Yet, sadly, there are so many still refusing to face their fears.

Though drug addiction is a more serious one, problems are problems, and will always be problems until they are resolved. A dead-end job, an abusive relationship, being estranged from a family member due to problems in the past (etc.); all of them require acknowledgement and action if you want them to go away.

I’ve learned that no one else- not God, not my parents, not Barack Obama- NO ONE can resolve anything for me. The trick is to strengthen your core (not your abs, your symbolic personal core) and to know not what you want to do, but who you want to be… To know whether or not you want tomorrow to be just like today, or if you need to make a change because today you weren’t that person. Sometimes it means walking to, and sometimes it means walking away… And sometimes you need to just trust yourself and get uncomfortable for a little while because, at the end of the day, that better life will come because of it.

Maybe it was the power of suggestion, or maybe it was just a coincidence… Either way, I’m thankful that 2010 has brought new and better things to so many people who believed in themselves enough to know that it would… Let’s think of something really cool for 2011. ;)
